1859 british minister john nelson darby begins preaching in america.
he would create an ingenious theology known as premillennial dispensationalism, which remains the dominant eschatological system in christianity today.
"dispensationalism" refers to darby's belief that human history can be divided into a series of epochs, or dispensations, in which god has dealt with humanity in different ways.

a good lesson for all:.
learn to put away all badness of this old world, and make the necessary changes to prepare for the kingdom of god.
pay back caesar's things to caesar, but god's things to god, especially god, because he owns all things, and will ask for an accounting from everyone.

one of the things we were constantly taught as jws was that the vast majority of the world are intrinsically bad; wicked enough to warrant destruction at armageddon.. last xmas, a film "love actually" (sentimental tat really but who says we don't need sentimentality occasionally) was based on the idea that everywhere people are in love and being loved.
also, a couple of tv documentaries shown recently in uk, michael palin's 'himalaya' and ewan mcgregor's 'long way round' had these intrepid travellers visiting remote corners of the earth.
it was striking just how friendly and helpful people can be to strangers.

I'm not, nor have I ever been a JW, but, If men are intrinsically good, why do we need laws to keep order?

lately i have been arguing with my father about my beliefs and such.
i belive that the wbts is not the faithful and discrete slave and i don't agree with many of the wbts techings.
the easiest way for me to do this is to discredit the bible but this isn't working with my father.

If you find a JW that believes the bible, it may work. But most JWs don't believe the bible, they only believe what the Watchtower says about the bible.

many of you migth know the archetypal jewish hero was joshua (the successor of moses) otherwise known as yeshua ben nun (?jesus of the fish?).
since the name jesus (yeshua or yeshu in hebrew, ....ioshu in greek,...( source of the english spelling) , originally was a title (meaning ?saviour?, derived from ?yahweh saves?
)......what was jesus's real name?
gumby Almost all names at that time were titles, why would Jesus be any different?
Mat 24:5 For many shall come in my name, (or authority) saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. The real question is "did he have the goods?", was he really who he said he was? D Dog
perfection
after a discussion with a couple of current jws, it's come to my attention that my conception of perfection in "the kingdom" is very different from theirs.
on pages 188 & 189 of the knowledge book, we see the society's (or artist's) conception.
Perfection After a discussion with a couple of current JWs, it's come to my attention that my conception of perfection in "the Kingdom" is very different from theirs. On pages 188 & 189 of the Knowledge book, we see the society's (or artist's) conception. I prompted the discussion by asking, why is there so much sin in this picture? I really enjoyed the moment of silence that ensued, then, the response "Where?" "we don't see any sin". So I asked, why are all the people wearing clothes? After a few chuckles and another moment of silence one said, "I don't see the connection". Then I asked about the garden of Eden and why if it is God's plan to return the earth to a perfect Eden like state, would anyone need to wear clothes? Still no response. So I asked them to turn in their bibles to Genesis 3:7, 10

Then the eyes of both of them became opened and they began to realize that they were naked. Hence they sewed fig leaves together and made loin coverings for themselves. ... 10 Finally he said: "Your voice I heard in the garden, but I was afraid because I was naked and so I hid myself."What was the first thing Adam and Eve did after they sinned? I asked. "They made coverings to hide themselves" one said. So I asked, if there was no need for clothes in the garden, before A&E sinned why, (if there will be no more sin in the "Kingdom"), would people need to cover themselves?
After 4 years of meetings, this was the first time in months, that these two young guys (both in their early 20s) appeared to think, instead of the usual garbage in, garbage out, responses. They began to speculate, and we all know what that means. I heard words like "maybe this" or "maybe that"and "we don't know...yet" this lasted about ten minutes or so.
Finally one said, "I believe that you can do things wrong and still be perfect". How's that? I asked. He said, "what I mean by perfect, is that in the Kingdom we won't get sick or die." "I see, so perfection in the Kingdom is about the conditions that man will live in, not the change that God would have to make in my sinful nature" I said. That's right! he said. The meeting ended shortly after.
I'll be meeting again with them soon. I would like to talk more about the sinful nature of man. Any Ideas?

recently there have been discussions about the immortal soul, v's the wts beliefs, so i thought i'd present a little heard of (in jw circles) doctrine of the soul that seeks to explain some passages of scripture that are usually avoided.. first of all, leo posted some fascination information, which gives some background on the bible's general teaching on the soul:.

the doctrine itself surrounds two texts in particular, which i quote from the nwt:.

...whereas I would hold that the separation of soul and spirit occured while alive, perhaps beginning as early as in the garden of Gethsemane. How do you understand Heb.4:12?
How ever you want to say it, this is were the separation took place, (although I would say it was on the cross) and how God tasted death. I have no explanation for what happen to the Godhead, but something did. I believe it happened on the Divine level as well. Another good thread topic might be "the price paid for my sin" As for Hebrews 4:12, I not sure I do understand it, but I think it has more to do with the priesthood and mediatorship of Christ, than it does, the soul and spirit of man.
Surely it was the human person of God that was forsaken, not the deity of the Son? (or put another way, the human nature, not the divine one)
Why not the divine? D Dog

Let me start by saying Jesus never stopped being God. I do believe The Father forsook the Son completely (body, soul and spirit). I don't think that Jesus was separated from any part of His person (or his self), until his body died .LT wrote: Was the unity of the deity of godhead ever broken? Are you sure you're answering the right question? I was explicitly talking about his deity.
DD wrote: Yes, when the Father forsook the Son.
I believe his spirit was shrouded from his Soul / Body, and so he would feel the separation acutely.
It's not so much a matter of having relationships with the parts, any more than a hand has a distinct relationship with a fingernail
. It is, if you are comparing us to The triune God.
Maybe you'd like to answeer that qquestion, then
"How can God die?" I can only say, that any part of the Trinity being separated, might fit the biblical definition of death. D Dog
since sirona posted her thread about the wts view of hypnosis i've been thinking hard on how overbearing and endlessly intrusive the gb are in the day-to-day lives of the people their supposed to be 'serving'.
it occured to me that 'they' are the ones who are 'beating their fellow slaves.
' after re-reading matthew 24:45-51and luke 12:42-46 it seems to me that the evil slave would have be people who are still in a position of authority over jesus's followers during the end times and not people who were no longer a part of the congregation.
Oh come now Carm......you know god intended for his sacred writers to write about this 19th century group nearly two thousand years in advance. Russell was "foreknown" by god to be the originator of what would become the evil slave....known today as Jehovah's Witnesses. Everyone knows that ya big silly.
Oh come now Gum......look at Luke 21:8
He said: "Look out that YOU are not misled; for many will come on the basis of my name, saying, ?I am he,? and, ?The due time has approached.? Do not go after them.
Who else could Jesus be talking about.
